What is WPS file?
A WPS file is a file created by Microsoft Works word processing software. It includes the document elements that are similar to Microsoft Word.DOC document but does not contain highly developed formatting options and macros that a Word document may include. Many files with the WPS file extension are probably Microsoft Works Document files, but the WPS Writer software also produces these kinds of files.
The Microsoft Works Document file format was not continued by Microsoft in 2006 when it was exchanged by Microsoft’s DOC file format. These two are identical in that they both support rich text, tables, and images, but the WPS format lacks few of the more highly developed formatting properties supported with DOC.
How to Open WPS File?
As most of the WPS files you will find were probably created with Microsoft Works, they can surely be opened by that program. However, Microsoft Works has been not continued and it can be very difficult to get a duplicate copy of the software. luckily, WPS files can also be opened with any of the latest versions of Microsoft Word. In Microsoft Word 2003 or a newer version of it, just select the “Works” file type from the Open dialog box. You can then find the way to the folder including the WPS file that you want to open. The free AbiWord word processor also opens the WPS files, at least those files which are created with the definite versions of Microsoft Works. LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer are two more programs that can open WPS files for free.
If you’re having a problem in opening a WPS file with any of these techniques, the file might instead be a WPS Writer document, which also uses the WPS extension. You can open these kinds of WPS files with the WPS Office Writer software. Microsoft’s word viewer is another option if you just wish to view the WPS and not edit the WPS file. This free tool works for other documents also, like DOC, DOT, RTF, and XML.

Open WPS using Word Viewer
If you have not installed Office, you can give a try using the free Word Viewer program from Microsoft. Besides, to permit you to open Word documents, it lets you open Works 6 and Works 7 files.
especially, it does not talk about older versions of Works or newer versions like 8.0 or 9.0. If that does not work, you can also give try to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and see if that permits you to open the WPS file.
The compatibility pack consists of newer Office formats and may be able to open a WPS file that is created in version 8 or 9.
How to Convert WPS File?
There are two ways to convert a WPS file into another format:
- Open in WPS Supported programs.
- Convert the WPS to another file format.
For example, WPS Office Writer allows you to convert the WPS document to DOC, DOCX, PDF, XML, WPT, HTML, and other identification document formats. If anyone sent you a WPS file or if you have downloaded the WPS file from the internet, and you don’t want to install any of the programs that support WPS, we highly recommend you using Zamar or CloudConvert. These are the two examples of document converters that support converting WPS to formats like DOC,
DOCX, ODT, PDF, TXT, and others for free. With these two WPS converters, you just need to upload the file to the website and then select the format that you wanted to convert it to. Then, download the converted document back to your computer for further use. Once the WPS file has been converted in a more familiar format, you can use it without any problem in word processor programs and online word processors.
